Oral Microbiome Testing

What is the oral microbiome?
Your mouth contains hundreds of species of bacteria. Many support good health, while others increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and chronic inflammation.

Why do we test?
For selected patients, microbiome testing can provide valuable information that complements our evaluation of facial growth, airway health, breathing patterns, oral hygiene, and overall oral health.

When might testing be recommended?
• Recurrent cavities or white spot lesions
• Mouth breathing
• Persistent gum inflammation
• High-risk orthodontic patients
• Patients with unexplained disease despite good hygiene

How is the test done?

A sample of saliva is collected and sent to a lab (currently ImpetusDX.com).

What happens after the test?

We review the results with you and your dentist. When appropriate, we'll help coordinate care with healthcare providers who specialize in oral microbiome management.
