Reflex Integration and Orthodontic Health

We are born with innate, "primitive" reflexes that help us manage the world we've just been born into.  Eventually they can fade away, or "integrate" once we develop more mature, voluntary behaviors.

Sometimes they linger longer than they should, leaving us with behaviors or movements that don't work as well as they should.  These "retained" reflexes may leave us with problems of the face and mouth, or problems with behavior that makes dental treatment itself more difficult.

This table examines just a few of over two dozen reflexes. Look over this page to see if any of these apply to you or your child.  Working with specially trained therapists (pediatric development, occupational, or others) can help these reflexes fade away as they teach you to replace them with a better way.
